Electrical Testing & Safety Inspections In Shropshire

A Periodic Inspection Report (PIR) or (EICR) is a term used within the electrical installation business. Every commercial property should have its electrical installation tested and certified periodically, with the frequency depending on the building’s age, use and general condition.

This is a statutory regulation in the “Electricity at Work Regulations 1989” and can be used against an employer in a court of law. The BS 7671 17th Edition book is a guide on how installations should be installed & maintained. Testing methods & procedures are outlined in the IEE Guidance Note 3 book.

Commercial Electrical Inspections, Certificates & Testing

The amount of time the inspection takes depends on the type of the installation, labelling of the fuse boards and whether the installation is being used at the time of testing. Any faults found are given a code of reference:

Code 1 Urgent attention required
Code 2 Improvement required
Code 3 Requires further investigation
Code 4 Does not comply with the current BS 7671 regulations

Code 1 & 2 observations/faults will deem the installation to be unsatisfactory and will have to be rectified to bring the report up to a satisfactory condition.

Commercial PIR Testing & EICR Certificates In Shropshire

A PIR / EICR will reveal if electrical circuits are being overloaded, condition of the wiring, carry out visual inspections, find potential hazards within the electrical installation, identify defective DIY work highlight any lack of earthing or bonding, and continue to test the fixed wiring of the installation. This includes checking fuse or circuit breaker ratings and testing the RCDs to ensure they trip under fault conditions.

The outcome from the Periodic Inspection Report will establish the overall condition of all of the electrics (a bit like an MOT on a motor vehicle). It will tell you whether it is satisfactory for continued use and will detail any remedial work that might need to be done, graded by importance with a recommended timescale.
